Jumping to Lightspeed

I have always dreamed of running the Disney Half-Marathon , but I have put it off for one reason or another — generally because I thought I was “too fat” and I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of Mickey Mouse.

I am through with that mentality. I am worthy of doing something I love whether I think I am too fat for it or not. I can run through Disneyland’s Main Street if I want to, and who cares if I have bouncy or flouncy parts.

Now that I have finally decided this, I discovered they have a Star Wars version of the race! Disney and Star Wars are my two great loves. I could run through Disneyland beside Chewie and Han — I have to do this!… but I can’t afford the $185 entry fee right now, so I am looking for sponsors.

In these troubled times, it seems absolutely ridiculous to ask people to donate money so I can run around Disneyland in Star Wars t-shirt, in fact I highly recommend you flip over a page or two on the gofundme page and donate to worthier causes – seriously, please do, I’m going to give $5 to support the victims of the Pulse Shooting.

But I also believe that the world is big enough for both tragedy and joy, so if you happen to have some spare change and would like to help one overweight girl feel the power of the Force, get out of bed, and run every morning, I would be most grateful.  I know it is asking a lot to ask anyone one for anything, so I am exceedingly grateful for your generosity in any amount. Thank you for reading this, that alone is support enough.

Any money I raise over the $185 entry fee, I will donate to the Make A Wish Foundation to “pay it forward” in wish giving.

Truly thank you, and may the Force be with you—always

In 2009 a stranger gave me $400 to go to a novelist’s fan gathering on the other side of the country. There may have been “worthier” causes in need of that money, but that weekend meant the world to me and the relationships and memories I made are still actively affecting me today. I’m honoured to be a part of you forming those same kinds of memories. Thank you for asking. I look forward to hearing the stories of the race!
